&#60;img width="2234" height="1537" width_o="2234" height_o="1537" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/4e645e9aeda647a4f65b022d74db6058279bb022d309471de71d1e4e240e2312/4.jpg" data-mid="178774598" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/4e645e9aeda647a4f65b022d74db6058279bb022d309471de71d1e4e240e2312/4.jpg" /&#62;

An invitation is a gesture that welcomes you into a private space, takes you to a past memory, an imagined future, a proposition to meet in the present and share a moment together.&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;

Through the theme INVITATION, Art for All Festival 2023 will explore the meaning of home and the mental images of social interactions. The theme contains thoughts about the role and importance of home as a shelter, a constructed or selected space, as well as its different manifestations. The theme includes thoughts about homelessness, social challenges and safe spaces that communities create for themselves.

The festival will take place in the Kalasatama area of Helsinki, reflecting and responding to its environment and community in cooperation with HEKA Oy, NAL apartments, Taiteilijatalo Ars Longa and Settlement apartments. The area is new, unfinished, and still looking for its narratives. Kalasatama hides a flourishing urban culture, interesting places and a diverse and active population. From its roof tops to the seaside, how will it evolve? How will our ways of living adapt and change?

We invite you to imagine and embody the experiences of home and invitation in this urban place.

Each space has its own possibilities and limitations, so please consider that when applying, you can apply to primary or secondary spaces with your project.

	FOOD ART OPEN CALL

As part of the open call we are inviting artists to use food as a medium for their work. Read more here:

Food as a medium, the kitchen as a social place.

We have food when we are happy, we have food when we are sad, and when we lose someone or when someone is born, we say sorry by offering it as if cooking is an act of care. We can fix conflicts by offering food, but then the food itself is also a source of conflict; we waste it, we fight over it, we distribute it unequally, and we value it to certain degrees. The production, distribution, and consumption of food are shaped by economic, social, and political forces.

Invitation

The kitchen is where meals are prepared, but it is also a space for social interaction and connection. Food brings people together and builds communities. No matter if it is a potluck, a communal meal, or just having conversations that happen around “food” and sometimes about food.

AFA invites artists who work with food as a medium or use food and the act of cooking as a way of sharing or talking; AFA invites you all around a shared table.

We are looking for artists to join the Art For All Festival – Success &#38;amp; Glory, taking over the shopping center Easton Hansakäytävä in Itäkeskus from 22 to 24 August 2025! OPEN CALL HAS BEEN EXTENDED! Propose your artwork via an open call form by July 14th.
&#60;img width="1920" height="1080" width_o="1920" height_o="1080" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/9b1ced3f15d2551d602fc7cfc12d3c99540f20f6741c36d98b3a79423533f0fb/banner_eng.png" data-mid="234366038" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/9b1ced3f15d2551d602fc7cfc12d3c99540f20f6741c36d98b3a79423533f0fb/banner_eng.png" /&#62;

Money, grind and consumerism! Steps on the way towards Success &#38;amp; Glory. Art For All Festival of 2025 invites reflections on what success means in contemporary society.

Through the theme SUCCESS &#38;amp; GLORY the festival explores narratives and ideals in a society that pushes individualism, competition, and constant self-development. Evolve or perish! Be the best version of yourself! Behind success narratives are stories of people who are messy, complicated, and exhausted. What about when your efforts do not succeed? Does contemporary society allow failure?

The festival takes place in Itäkeskus in East Helsinki. The area was built from the 1960s onwards as a modernist car city situated in the crossroads of major highways, hypermarkets and parking lots. Fossil economy was harnessed for better quality of living for all. Behind Itäkeskus were utopian visions of society: an urban machine where people worked, lived, and consumed.

In the eyes of the City of Helsinki however the utopia did not succeed. In 2019 the City launched an architectural competition for a new Center of East Helsinki. As a result of the competition major urban renewal is planned leading to demolition of many of the area’s landmarks, including our festival venue.

In the midst of the City’s visions for success are the local people. Since its construction Itäkeskus has become home to many immigrant communities and cultures. Many small businesses and entrepreneurs have operated for years in the shopping malls such as Easton Hansakäytävä. As a result Itäkeskus is home to an exceptionally vibrant and diverse urban culture in Helsinki.

We invite artists to look beneath the surface: what do concepts such as success or places such as shopping centers mean in the context of Itäkeskus?

We welcome artworks from all fields of art (from installations to dance and music performances). We are looking for works to be exhibited in the weekend long exhibition as well as time specific performances as part of the festival opening programme.

The festival takes place in the empty spaces of the shopping center Easton Hansakäytävä.

You can get to know the venue and the different spaces by clicking here.

	CALL FOR WORKS WITH LOCAL BUSINESSES

As part of the open call we are inviting artists to create works that engage with the businesses of the shopping center.

What are the stories behind the shops in Easton Hansakäytävä? Some businesses have been in the shopping center for years, building a clientele and connections to the local community. What meanings are embedded in the building from the perspective of those who work there from dawn to dusk?

What do artists and entrepreneurs have in common? The seemingly different worlds share similar experiences of self-employment, precarity and constant competition. What joys and challenges can passion towards one’s work, be it in the arts or running a business, lead to? Who takes care of the local shopkeeper?

We invite artists to build a dialogue with the community of the shopping center. Those artists proposing a collaboration will be connected with the local businesses by the festival team. The businesses can be the topic of the proposed work or possibly the space where the work is exhibited (this has to be agreed upon with the business in question together with the artists, business, and the festival team).

The collaborations with local businesses compose a subsection of the open call. Artists are also able to propose their independent works to be exhibited in the empty spaces festival venue with their own topics and themes.

AFA is organizing a group exhibition this spring and is looking for artworks and performances from the members of the community!
If you are not a member yet you can apply for membership when submitting the open call application. The deadline for the open call is March 30th 23:59 Finnish time.

&#60;img width="6000" height="4000" width_o="6000" height_o="4000" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/954093dc2d0cf39c49a6473eedec176868d5b7f0d91465ae5079aff35deee2aa/IMG_2616.JPG" data-mid="227905442" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/954093dc2d0cf39c49a6473eedec176868d5b7f0d91465ae5079aff35deee2aa/IMG_2616.JPG" /&#62;

Do you have artworks waiting to be exhibited or a performance you want to test out? AFA is organizing a group exhibition for its members 22.4.-26.4.2025.
The exhibition fills the Infocenter Corona on the

Helsinki University Viikki campus with art. The building embodies the futurism and optimism of the early 2000s “eco architecture” where glass, steel and technology were harnessed to combat environmental challenges and inspire new ways of living. The exhibition approaches the building as an “ecosystem machine” creating various micoclimates and habitats inside the structure. The venue includes an out of use commercial space, multiple greenhouses and public library spaces.
The spaces invite thoughts and conversations about human-nature divide, liminal spaces and office work, education, research, knowledge production, environmental degradation and climate grief. The theme of the exhibition will be formulated based on the selected works.
The exhibition opens on Tuesday April 22nd as part of the national garden days when the building is filled with public programme.&#38;nbsp;

The artists are selected via an open call. In the selection we emphasize the diversity of the artistic disciplines as well as how the works complement each other and form a dynamic compilation in the spaces.
AFA is searching for finished artworks for the exhibition, and performances to be presented in the opening programme.
AFA offers each participating artist:

👁

a 100 euro exhibition/performance fee

👁

material support in installation

	Staircase

The Staircase is located behind the Stage. It is a closed room dominated by a staircase descending to the street level. It used to be an entrance to the shopping center that has since been closed. The space is relatively dark and suitable for example for light art or projections. The artworks should consider questions of accessibility when planning how the audience will experience the work.

	galleryThe Gallery itself can be used to exhibit works during the festival. The walls of the space are suited for 2D works of visual art. The works can be installed with nails or hooks connected to the wall directly or with seams suspended from the ceiling.

The Gallery is connected by small “bridges” containing technical equipment. The bridges can be used to exhibit for example small sculptures or installations that can be viewed from the Gallery.

The roof trusses supporting the skylight can be used to suspend installations from the ceiling. The technical feasibility of the installations will have to be confirmed with the shopping center staff, but the structures should be able to support light materials, for example textile installations.

The Gallery is publicly accessible within the shopping center opening hours and the festival cannot provide monitoring of the works during the whole time the building is open. The works exhibited in the Gallery should be such that they can be dismounted from the wall and taken behind locked doors outside the festival opening hours. Or the works have to be such that they can be left publicly accessible without monitoring with the artist's own responsibility. The festival does not insure the artworks.

The other spaces except the Gallery and the Stage can be locked outside the festival opening hours. All works are monitored by the festival staff during the festival opening hours.

		<description>ABOUT
/AFA

Art For All ry is a community of artists promoting cross artistic collaboration. The association is a platform for emerging professionals from various fields. Art For All (AFA for short) has been born out of a need for a more inclusive community in the field of art, providing peer support and encouraging collaboration instead of competition. By sharing knowledge and resources Art For All has brought together over 70 association members and hosted two art festivals featuring over thirty artists and performers.

The mission of the association is to lift up new voices in the field of art and promote the accessibility of art and culture. Art For All wants to open the enjoyment of art to a broader audience and especially reach those who are not high consumers of culture.

The community works on its mission through an annual cross-artistic Art For All Festival. The festival lifts up artists in the beginning of their careers through an anonymous open call. The festival is site specific, every year changing its location to new unusual places to exhibit art. The festival themes emerge from the venue and the partners that the festival is collaborating with.

Art For All collaborates with partners from all sectors of society, not only arts and culture. This is visible in the research based approach of the festival whereby by learning from experts from various disciplines the projects aim to create tangible societal impact.

In addition to the festival, Art For All organizes activity and events for its members and smaller projects as part of its artistic activity. You can find the earlier AFA projects on this page.

	AFA/FESTIVAL 2023The 2023 edition of the festival revolved around the theme Invitation. The festival reflected on the meaning of home and the social interactions related to everyday environments. It explored the urban space of Kalasatama as a place of complex relationships to our surroundings, neighbors, plants, and others..

The two-day event featured installations, performances, and artworks revolving around the theme of emergence. The exhibition explored human experiences in relation to the world and others. From underneath the surface of the visible, multiple perspectives and imaginary worlds emanate: wandering from the subliminal to the tangible, from the depths of life and consciousness to embodied realities. The event opens a social space for contemplations, connections, and reflection.

	The 2023 edition of the festival revolved around the theme Invitation. The festival reflected on the meaning of home and the social interactions related to everyday environments. It explored the urban space of Kalasatama as a place of complex relationships to our surroundings, neighbors, plants, and others. The theme evolved in contact with the Kalasatama area, its inhabitants, and the artists during the Residency and workshops. The works invited the public to participate in various performances, to meet the artists over shared meals and teas, and to follow the stories of those encounters. The artists’ did research on and thought about the role and importance of home; a clean and intimate space, its colours and tastes. They took a closer look at the concept of ownership and human interactions within and outside that space. Sometimes it is absent and even considered a wasteland. The selected artists explore the theme through multidisciplinary installations, growing and living artworks, dance, music, sound, participatory and site specific performances and textile pieces.

The festival was preceded by a week-long “neighborhood residency” where the artists build up their work in a cross-artistic environment and interact with the local residents. During the residency the artists will discuss the themes with researchers from various fields as well as with veteran artists from the Artist House Ars Longa.

The festival was a mix between an open doors day, a block party and a gathering among neighbors and strangers. The event was organized in collaboration with HEKA Oy, Setlementtiasunnot, NAL-asunnot and the Artist House Ars Longa. The festival has been planned together with the local residents who opened their semi-private everyday environments for visitors to experience.

	Elham is a modern dance piece that tells a story of poverty, exclusion and womanhood in Finnish society.

It explores the cycles that emerge in a life of material scarcity. What does deficiency feel like on our skin? Who are we when we have nothing? The choreography of the piece presents intangible phases that incarcerate the self when basic necessities are not met. It contemplates the boundaries that need to be broken so that the light of the thing we call “normal” can shed in.

As growth is an intrinsic part of human life, the piece is about detaching from those vicious patterns of survival by admitting how dependent we are on other people.
Kulminaatio is an art collective based in Helsinki. The collective consists of multidisciplinary artists from modern dance, music, digital sound design, costume design and visual arts backgrounds.

Their first production Sokea Piste was performed in Espoo in August 2021 and second one, Emma &#38;amp; Elham in Helsinki in June 2022. Kulminaatio takes initiative to shed light on the blind spots of today’s society. For their work on using artistic methods to create dialogue they have been nominated for the Finnish Act for Dialogue 2022 -award and Ashoka Nordic’s Young Changemaker of the Year -programme.

	This work reflects on patterns of behavior in intimate, public, and liminal spaces in relation to the fast urbanization and the appearance of categorically defined places in the cityscape. By observing ways of being in various spaces we explore the notion of home as well as the forms we create home-ness outside the private, privatized, and defined spaces we inhabit. In wastelands, we find home, by finding comfort in the undefined and acknowledging the openness for a collective of stories to happen.

The installation seeks to open up questions about the over-expanding urbanization and its effects on the ways of being within the structured - mostly imposed - narratives that come with the development of defined spaces. Driven by the in-between spaces the project invites the audience to inhabit the installation, exploring it as a landscape, interacting and rearranging it to open up the possibilities of being in the space beyond transitory roles.

	Through a daily practice of dyeing fabric with natural materials, the artist unveils hidden colours from Otaniemi that transcend beyond sight.

She would like to invite participants to a tea party where she serves wild herbal teas sourced from Otaniemi. By manifesting landscapes in the form of the teas, she seeks to establish a profound connection between her body and the surrounding environment. You are welcome to join this multisensory moment to recreate and explore anew the landscape within yourself.

Can colours be experienced even in darkness or with closed eyes? What hues and melodies can you hear from this tea house?
Nagisa Mizuno is an interdisciplinary artist from Japan. She is pursuing her MFA in the Global Art Practice programme at Tokyo University of the Arts, and is currently studying at Aalto University as an exchange programme. After majoring in International Development for her BA and working as a coordinator for international security issues at the Ministry of Defense in Japan, Mizuno changed her focus to more interpersonal issues. Her work incorporates an act of eating food to probe the ways in which we care about ourselves, others, and the surrounding environment. Through her art practice, she aims to create intertwined spaces of ‘fermentation’ in a playful way.

	A collaboration between 3 different actors: Human, Fungi and Computer. Each one has re-processed the product without having pure control over it.This landscape of alien familiarites started by human-made 3d objects which were then interpreted by a food 3d printer. The human then arranged the prints and left them alone. This is when the fungi took over, processing what the computer, machine and human had created, and made it it’s home.

One might look at this piece with a disgust that reminds us of that forgotten apple in the corner of a kitchen. But, if we try to look at the fungi expanding over these structures in this different context one might find curiosity and beauty. The artist invites you to inspire yourself with this landscape and think what kind of world it would be.Zina Marpegan is an Argentinian artist and designer based in Finland. Cleaning a person's home is a kind of dialogue between the cleaner and the customer. While cleaning seniors' homes, I have strongly experienced how company and conversation are almost more important than cleaning. Cleaning has thus this spiritual side, which I have highlighted in my previous artistic performances related to cleaning.

My artwork in Kalasatama is a process in which I set up an office for a small cleaning firm, offering home cleaning to customers living in Kalasatama. I first receive customers and interview them about their cleaning needs and what they think about their home. 3 homes will be drawn from among the applicants, they will receive a real home cleaning from me for free. After all, I'm also a professional cleaner, and I've done private cleaning for many years in very different homes.

I ask the client what they think about having someone come clean for them right away. For example, does the customer feel the need to go and tidy up a bit first, so that the cleaner can come? Is someone ashamed of their home and if they are why?

Leena Pylkkö is a visual and performance artist based in the small archipelago municipality of Taivassalo. She studied sculpture in the Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki and graduated with a Diplom from the Freie Kunst from the Muthesius Academy of Fine Arts in Germany. She has held numerous solo exhibitions with her naivistic clay figures and participated in many art events with performances related to cleaning.

	In "The Home is Where I Step My Toe," I plan to research and explore different ways to turn a randomly selected place into a home. A place is a spot in the world to which humans assign meaning. I’m asking what happens if we give a randomly selected outdoor place the meaning of home?

I create a site-specific performance that takes shape through process-based working methods. I incorporate bodily practice methods and sound art in my performance. My working method involves visiting the selected space, immersing myself in it, and observing its details, history, meanings, and atmosphere. Through my artwork, I aim to highlight the observations and thoughts that the place evokes within me. I want to encourage the audience to slow down and experience the space alongside me. I firmly believe that different places have much to teach us; we simply need to pause, sense and listen.Marianne Turtio (b.1992) is a performance artist who combines performance practice with the theory of site-specificity. Marianne has a master’s degree in Visual Culture, Curating and Contemporary art at Aalto University. She also has a bachelor's degree in Performing arts.&#38;nbsp; She has work experience from acting and performing to working as an art instructor and event producer.

In Marianne’s recent artistic works she researches the concept of space. She creates performances and video documentations inspired by the communication between her direct environment and herself; she is fascinated by different social themes which come up from that dialogue.&#38;nbsp; Her heart beats for nature, urban spaces, sounds, interventions, other people and operating in public spaces. She finds her drive when questioning the actions of humankind by using forms of performance, bodily practices, sound - and video art.

	‘the chopping, the stirring, the occasion’ is a food artwork that involves the communal cooking, data gathering, and a data-driven soundscape of preparation. The kitchen is an emotionally charged environment that acts as a threshold of intimacy and trust – to ‘see the kitchen’ is to be allowed in and accepted.

First is a communal preparation of a traditional Lithuanian dish, a cold beetroot soup ‘šaltibarščiai‘. During the preparation, chopping sounds are recorded with surface microphones attached to the chopping board. The finished soup is shared and comes with nice conversations.

The collected data is replayed on a loop as a perpetual, endless ritual of preparing a meal for guests. Utensils set on motors gently hit the cutting board, recreating a domestic soundscape of anticipation and care. As the rhythm repeats itself, the before and after of a meal becomes blurred, the kitchen turns mobile, and the invitation echoes.Vytautas Bikauskas is a Lithuanian multimedia artist currently living in Helsinki, Finland. He has received his BA (Hons) in Interaction Design from the Glasgow School of Art, and is currently pursuing his MA in New Media at Aalto University. His practice is centered around time, rituals and labour. He also teaches Physics and is seeking spaces for shared art-science pedagogy.

	‘of the ordinary, in this ordinary (2023) emerged from a moment of pause, when doing my laundry in the summer of 2022. Thinking about how textiles occupy innocuous positions, all around our everyday lives, I started to pay closer attention to my daily life, and particularly the routines surrounding my everyday textiles in my home.

I see myself as a ‘translator’ in this process, translating the experiences of my home into textiles and traversing across mediums in this process. With each medium and transformation adding to the initial experience and observations, the daily life then translates onto textile, that is embedded with the rich storytelling that lies in the everyday. The installation consists of these multiple ‘translations’ - woven jacquard textiles, a diary, sketches and a collage book and reflects on how the space of the home, and my experiences with the textiles that live in it, can make what appears to be ‘mundane’ and ‘ordinary’, into something that is full of life.&#38;nbsp;
Anusuya Krishnaswamy (b. 1997) is a textile designer-maker based in Helsinki. With her practice she is particularly curious about woven constructions, and the intrinsic connection between the textile and the maker in the slow process. She is currently finishing an MA in Fashion, Clothing and Textile Design at Aalto University.

	‘Do you imagine the life a person lives behind a window you pass by on the way to work? Was it a good day or a busy one when they left in a hurry leaving an unfinished meal behind? In this series of works Polina is exploring local food habits and home decorations which she then reforms and imitates with hand stitching, textile modification and fabric. The installation is made using a thin transparent tulle and an old window frame, found from a local vintage shop. In the first window of the series you’ll find Marimekko design plates and vases with a composition of flowers. In the Kalasatama window Polina is showing food-still-life compositions in addition to the flowers. The final piece can be experienced with different lighting that adds depth and perspective to the piece.
Poling Laamanen is a Russian-Finnish embroidery and textile artist currently based in Vantaa, Finland. Her background is in chemical engineering (MD). This project started with the question of a territorial dispute over "the" island.

What does it mean to possess? We try to own nature and fight over it through money, borders, boundaries, and maps, through the language we have defined. But from nature's perspective, such language does not exist.

The question invites people into a space to explore the meaning and behavior of human beings in trying to own nature. This installation is a space filled with salt representing a landscape, and the audience is invited to touch it with their bodies and hands, and to create their own spaces and boundaries. On the last day of the exhibition, a performance consisting of pouring water and washing away our traces, raises questions about the meaning of our actions. This question about one island extends to all the territorial conflicts that are happening around the world today, as well as to the question of how we exist with nature.
Jimin Hong (South Korea, 1997) is a practice-based designer based in Helsinki. Her practice integrates filmmaking, material research, and performance to question and create spaces for socio-cultural discourses. Her recent works explore territorial disputes, ecosystems, and beings threatened by biodiversity loss and climate change. She has a BA in Furniture Arts and Fine Arts and is currently pursuing an MA in Contemporary Design at Aalto University.

	käytiin tällaisissa paikoissa, kuvattiin tällä kameralla&#38;nbsp; /&#38;nbsp; we went to places like this, we filmed with this camera&#38;nbsp; (2024) is a 4-second stop-motion animation loop made from footage shot with a 20-year-old pocket camera. The camera belonged to my parents, who I used it with on nature trips during my childhood. The frames were printed on paper, handwritten with text, then scanned back into digital form. The work deals with nostalgia, family, and inheriting one’s relationship to nature from their parents. It also plays with the materiality of physical and digital – paper, handwriting, and grainy video.

Kaius Kuhmonen is a multimedia artist and art education student working with video, performance, and interactive media. Kuhmonen’s work deals with nostalgia, nature, and observations of human society. Recently Kaius has been exploring programming and interactive media.

Flooding Pattern

&#60;img width="1512" height="1349" width_o="1512" height_o="1349" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/b0d34167ae3389dadf1f56dc579d246bfba688b2f7d9b24e39c769e964603122/01_2---Sinethebobbo.png" data-mid="229781024" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/b0d34167ae3389dadf1f56dc579d246bfba688b2f7d9b24e39c769e964603122/01_2---Sinethebobbo.png" /&#62;

This project was inspired by my annual visits to my grandmother in the northern part of Thailand. Her having to move furniture to the second level of the house every year to escape flooding has drawn my serious attention to this issue.
Each region of Thailand has its own long history of weaving. This cultural knowledge has been passed down from generation to generation. One of the famous patterns is called ‘ลายน้ำไหล,’ or ‘flowing water,’ from Nan province. It was inspired by the main river, which is the heart of the region’s community but unfortunately floods frequently, destroying lives and homes. Climate change has worsened the issue, and in 2024, Nan experienced a major flood with the highest water level in 100 years.
Using the 30 years data (1988-2018) of water amount in each month at the main measurement station (Nan River, N.1, Forestry Office), each Row consists of 12 patterns representing 12 months. The number of lines in between each year corresponds to the number of accumulated water of the previous year. The width and the height of year and month correspond to the amount of water collected in that particular period.

Suthasinee is a designer, lifelong learner, and curious experimenter with a deep appreciation for unordinary ideas, passionate about weaving technology and art to craft or reimagine stories in a new light.

The Nordic Forecast is a series of over 40 works blending self-portraiture and body performance, capturing the artist’s adaptation to Finland’s shifting climate across all seasons. Through various perspectives, the series reveals the emotional and physical resilience required to endure the extremes of nature.
Born from the artist’s relocation to Finland, the project became a personal ritual and quiet resistance to the cold. It explores the body’s relationship with its environment, reflecting the emotional and physical strength needed to navigate the challenges of climate change and its profound impact on the self.

Luiza Preda is a conceptual artist exploring time, space, and perception through still and moving images. Her intuitive process allows subconscious narratives to emerge organically, often long after the work is made. Her immersive installations merge photography with mixed-media techniques—such as sound, textiles, and spatial design—creating multi-sensory experiences that foster introspection and emotional connection.

Somatotopic Landscapes

Video 2’10”, Burnt wood, porcelain, glaze, soil, wax

Somatotopy describes areas of the body where the body as a whole is reflected. This work is about the relation of our body as a cartographic representation of the whole organism we inhabit. Capturing the notion of caring while playing with the symbolism of teeth, I translated somatotopy to the wider body of earth, seeing us humans as a somatotopic area, reflecting our interrelation of our small to the extended body.

On the wrong end, the flipside, where you can see the bottom thread (the unfit viewing direction). Ravel, flipside (or knotting) acts as a divider of negative space, and suggests looking at three-dimensional as only two - the front, and the back.

Inspired by the fleeting and fragmented views from an airplane window, this hand-embroidered textile piece captures the patchwork of landscapes seen from above - lakes carving through fields, pathways and roads threading between forests. The meticulous stitchwork translates aerial perspectives into tactile textures, offering a meditation on distance, observation, and the ways in which we map our surroundings.

Pola Laamanen (b. 1989, St. Petersburg, Russia) is a contemporary embroidery artist based in Vantaa, Finland (since 2019). Blending traditional techniques with hand-modified textiles, Pola’s background in Chemical Engineering informs her unique approach to texture and material.

Laamanen developed her signature style in 2016, launching a popular line of hand-embroidered jewellery. Her innovative work has garnered international recognition, with features in Vogue Scandinavia and Embroidery Magazine (UK). Her book, 3D Realistic Embroidery (EKSMO, 2020), highlights her creative vision and technical expertise.
In 2024, Pola received an artistic grant from the Kone Foundation and a creative entrepreneur grant from AVEK Kopiosto. These accolades support her current work, where she delves into embroidery heritage, reimagining traditional techniques within a modern context.

Nuclear Cholo pieces explores the entanglement of identity, power, and legacy through a visual dialogue between nuclear war iconography, the colonial Spanish casta system, and ancient Peruvian ceramic forms. By re-contextualizing pre-Columbian forms with dystopian symbols of annihilation, the piece critiques the violent hierarchies embedded in both historical and modern systems. The term cholo, once used to classify mixed Indigenous identity under colonial rule, is reimagined as a site of resistance—an echo of survival. Layered with apocalyptic imagery, the work reflects on the socio-political fallout of imperialism, casting ancient cultural expression into a contemporary lens of global precarity and resilience.

Palpas work spans into the intersections of media consumption, religion, and politics, using mediums such as moving image, photography, and sculpture. Palpa's work infuses public spaces with poetic narratives that challenge conventional personal expectations. A recurring theme in Palpa's art is the exploration of how belief, imagery, and ideology become intertwined and constructed within a consumerist landscape. This exploration often takes shape in his large-scale installations, which reimagine aesthetic vandalism and propagandistic seduction that questions its surroundings.

	We are a visual artist collective from Helsinki focusing on photography. Our latest visual projects have developed into narrative visual discussions with senses that nature has to offer. We try to encourage our audience to engage into thinking about the experiences and thoughts they had when encountering material found in nature. We use elements like wood, moss, fur and crops to remind people about the simple sensations that make us part of our environment. We find photography to be a timeless and versatile medium to catch the changing light and vast opportunities but also use it´s illusional character as a provocative way to show the distance between us and our surrounding world. Part of our practice is also to show the joy of doing creative work and spread the importance of art as a way to engage with the world.

Anna-Liisa Harju is a visual artist and educator based in Helsinki. She is a Lapland Univeristy Faculty of Art alumni with additional studies in Helsinki University.

Syviä Häivähdyksiä, Deep Tinge

2024, Dance performance, Sound

In the poem of Stephen Crane “In The Desert” (1895) they find a bestial creature eating pleasureful their own bitter heart in the middle of a desert. I instead found a wheelbarrow of freshly cut roses in front of the botanical garden, beautifully blooming, at the same time dying. For me both of these images merge creating an amalgamation of pleasure and pain, of vulnerability, the incredible beauty of life, and death which is always there. My wish is to playfully dance it.

Välke Ruusunen is a dance artist exploring and wandering the world through dance, butoh and improvisation. They are interested in sensations, bodily knowledge, softness, rituals and sensuous existence. Välke’s favourite tools in their practice are improvisation,TRE and touch explorations. Edvin Bäckman

Minnet av ett hav

2026, oil on canvas

	&#60;img width="1512" height="3300" width_o="1512" height_o="3300" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/6cbcded1d0d49dafd5e6ff94382661e3eba27a4faef5423bf337918f2faeb24f/edvin-bckman.jpg" data-mid="246267332" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/6cbcded1d0d49dafd5e6ff94382661e3eba27a4faef5423bf337918f2faeb24f/edvin-bckman.jpg" /&#62;

Minnet av ett hav touches on feelings that are hard to put into words. The artwork is a part of a bigger series of Edvin’s paintings that represents the artist's way of looking back at painful experiences, and exploring ways in which the feelings about them have changed, disappeared and become something better. The artist explores the state in-between the feelings of old pain and darkness and beautiful and lighter things that have come in their place.

-

Edvin Bäckman is a 19 years old artist studying architecture at Aalto university. Edvin primarily works with oil paintings on canvas, watercolour, and ceramics.

Sofia Kanen
	Viaton - Innocent/Flawless (2026), multimaterial sculpture: Lace curtain, glue, beads, wire and chain.

	&#60;img width="2521" height="2628" width_o="2521" height_o="2628" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/0c3d741221de0285a9c288daf50450a3f6d9b908bc65f63c1a2632980eddee8a/Sofia-Kanen.jpg" data-mid="246267292" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/0c3d741221de0285a9c288daf50450a3f6d9b908bc65f63c1a2632980eddee8a/Sofia-Kanen.jpg" /&#62;

"Viaton" explores themes of genuinity, innocence and imperfection. The sculpture was an experimental art project with an idea to capture the human body in an unlikely way. The mould for the sculpture was made with the artist's own body, and all the material used in the installation were recycled. The piece was inspired by the Arte Povera exhibition in Emma Museum 2025-2026.

-

Sofia Kanen is an architecture student from Espoo. Her main artistic fields include painting, jewellery making, circus and theatre. She has been working with different materials such as yarn, fabric and beads from a young age. Sofia's art is often influenced by womanhood and the surrounding nature.

Teittinen Lizard

Lummelampi (Lilypond)

2026, concrete, glass, ceramics, plaster, video projection

	&#60;img width="4617" height="4224" width_o="4617" height_o="4224" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/478a29fdfed9686bf4cc0a7c83ad894568db9cd893d90f48408eadb83d5ded6e/pond3---Teittinen.jpg" data-mid="246115401" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/478a29fdfed9686bf4cc0a7c83ad894568db9cd893d90f48408eadb83d5ded6e/pond3---Teittinen.jpg" /&#62;

Lummelampi (Lilypond) evokes the feeling of diving into a pond and floating in the water, gently being caressed by water lilies and other aquatic plants. The installation celebrates natural bodies of water and the simple joy of being and swimming in them.

-

Teittinen Lizard is a Helsinki-based visual artist working primarily through sculpture. Their sculptures most often depict human figures, the largest of which are slightly smaller than life-sized, and the smallest about the size of a matchbox. The premise of their works typically begins with some particular emotion or experience, after which they select materials to support and express the emotion. Many of their pieces are created through handbuilding clay techniques and various casting methods. However, a significant part of their artistic practice is also based on playfully experimenting with and exploring unusual materials, for example saltdough.

	What Remains
(2025), Ceramics, soil, citrus tree

	&#60;img width="5568" height="3712" width_o="5568" height_o="3712" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/8d05fc6018585eece0f37f4efeb49d9424a17eadb5360de56dbb5713518ec980/WhatRemains-photos---Alarik-Rantala_Page_2.jpg" data-mid="246115404" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/8d05fc6018585eece0f37f4efeb49d9424a17eadb5360de56dbb5713518ec980/WhatRemains-photos---Alarik-Rantala_Page_2.jpg" /&#62;

What Remains studies humans’ desire to cling to the mortal realm, even in death. We perform funeral rites that undermine the circle of life, as they prolong the decay of the human body. We leave behind tombstones and memories. For only when one is forgotten are they truly dead.

“While I will rot and be devoured by maggots, this effigy of my body will outlive even future generations as a piece of fired clay. My corpse, however, will ultimately nurture new life, as represented by the citrus tree.”

-

Alarik Rantala (b. 1999) is a Finnish artist and designer based in Espoo. He has worked with many materials, from glass to mycelium, but considers ceramics and fibre arts his preferred media. His work often explores themes of death, sexuality, and spirituality, inviting the viewer to explore the artist’s inner psyche and experience catharsis. Currently, he is studying at Aalto University and working towards two master's degrees: MA in Contemporary Design and MSc in Marketing.

I believe that in the future, everything will look like this: information will reach its smallest dimensions, and the universe will be nothing more than an object the size of a wall. I tried to make it as light and changeable as I wanted it to be. Weightless organic light installations. Outdoor and indoor. All materials from Finland.

-

The girl is an artist and photographer: "I used to take more photos. Then I realized I'd become less about the photo and more about the subject. I explore what's attractive to the eye and fascinating to the brain. I think about themes of lightness or protecting the vulnerable. Love first, wisdom next. Like perfume, but for the retina. I was born in 1988, and since then I've been dying every night".

Simo Sahlman’s linocuts and mixed material artworks study the idea of nostalgia as a seemingly harmless entity. A ghost that speaks from the past. A hauntological voice that has a malevolent side to it as it seems to control the present.

-

Simo Sahlman (b. 1979) is an artist living in Helsinki. He is studying art education in Aalto university and has participated in several group exhibitions, including Pentouse gallery, Om’pu gallery and Toinen silmä gallery. His most recent solo exhibition was in Kammio gallery 2025. Sahlman works around themes of nostalgia and life in the city. He uses painting, printmaking, soft materials and drawing as mediums.

Honey i’m home
2026, durational performance

	&#60;img width="3648" height="5472" width_o="3648" height_o="5472" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/c934a6585d310c7ac8e809fdc399dc9b1a94d7e08ed0b58e119995a7329df6c4/7R2A1629---Sara-Maria-Pirhonen.jpg" data-mid="246115395" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/c934a6585d310c7ac8e809fdc399dc9b1a94d7e08ed0b58e119995a7329df6c4/7R2A1629---Sara-Maria-Pirhonen.jpg" /&#62;

The performance is a live installation in which the audience may stay briefly or remain for a longer period. Viewers are free to come and go. They can observe how the relationship between the performer and the space shifts from intimate to public, from home to stage.
At the core of the piece is a hyper/alter ego called Honey. An exaggerated and empowered self through which the body claims space and visibility. Within the world of drag and cabaret, Honey explores identity, privacy, freedom and intimacy. When does a home become a stage, and when does a body become a demonstration?
/

The work is based on the artistic part of Pirhonen’s thesis that was performed at the Helsinki Theatre Academy in 2022.

Original working group:

Facilitator/performer: Sara-Maria Pirhonen
Concept/script: Minne Mäki &#38;amp; Sara-Maria Pirhonen

Sara-Maria Pirhonen is an actor and dancer who graduated from the Helsinki Theatre Academy in 2024. They work broadly across the field of performing arts and enjoy interdisciplinarity in its various forms. In their artistic work, Pirhonen is intrigued by the embodied and grotesque stage, exploring themes such as sensuality, gender and emancipation. They work in the intersections of drama, film, dance-, and contemporary theatre. Pirhonen is interested in creating art that reaches into the gaps and cracks rather than projecting a seamless surface.
